the fugue

between un- and consciousness
it seems the toll is cheap;
sometimes i'm wholly dreaming
before i'm full sleep.
the train of thought i'm riding
when pillow meets with head
soon jumps the tracks for new stops
between wonder and dread.
the return trip: just as odd;
surreal melts into real.
i'm left straddling the cusp
between two worlds revealed.
