haibun is originally a japanese poetry form. it consists of a prose / non-rhyming poetry element followed by a haiku element.
the prose/non-rhyming poetry element can be of any length or style and con be on basically any subject. and while the tone of this element is descriptive, it tends to be concrete and not overly emotional (though this is not a set rule).
the haiku element usually elaborates upon or explores an idea from the preceding non-rhyming element, though usually in less concrete terms. and while the norm for english haiku structure is a three line stanza with 5-7-5 syllable count, that is just the 'norm' and not the form that must be used.
in collaboration, this form is most easily used with one writer handling the non-rhyming element and the other dealing with the haiku. either element can be completed first and act as the seed for the other, so long as the finished work is formatted with the haiku following the non-rhyming element.

haibun it came to my attention, all on its own,
that i had yet to write a form/content
piece concerning the haibun. i immediately
began to imagine how to pour the prose-aic
body: mix blithe poetry with a pinch of nod
and a scoche of wink.
once that has set and cured one thing would
remain to place.
this snarky pennant:
fluttering from tower's spire,
tilting your view-point.
the hobbit: 30 years later i know this bridge across the Water and the meander of this path under the Hill.
each round door i pass is a milestone marking years and leagues of experiences and growth.
and as i approach my destination
- that green door, sigil-etched -
i am greeted with a sense of homecoming in the ghosts of smoke rings and 'good morning's.
reliving
the first time i called
at bag end.
there and back again cycle the journey of one thousand miles begins
when my alarm says so. mild surprise turns
to less-than-mild disappointment as my brain
wakes up enough to tell me it's two a.m. and
time to go to work. it then dozes through
the shower (lather, rinse, repeat), getting
dressed (pants, smock, shoes), and packing
my tools (knives, shears, sharpie) until i
walk out the door.
in neutral,
perched atop a hill.
then...the...push...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the jangle of my (brass) keys (bellchimesgongs)
locking the door as i leave is a benediction.
i reach the bottom of the stairs, step out
under the stars, and begin
Hello Mr. Inkfish,
Thanks for this! I've been writing a large number of haiku poems (what in the bejeezus is the plural of haiku?) and needed to learn how to do haibun to keep myself sane.
Peace,
WinteroftheSoul
